Tech Frontier (careers)

The Tech Frontier cover

The UK’s tech industry is booming, yet it faces a critical shortage of skilled talent – and nowhere more so than in the South-West peninsula. If we could support more young people – especially those from under-resourced backgrounds – into tech careers, we could simultaneously secure the continued growth of this vital industry and address the region’s stark social mobility issues.

In our ‘TECH FRONTIER’ report launched in April 2024, we identified eight initiatives to get more young people into tech. Our objective for the rest of 2024 is to set up, run and evaluate pilots for two initiatives: Year 10 Tech Work Experience and Year 7 to 11 Tech Workshops.

As a spin-off from the Commission, we are developing The Tech Frontier, a social enterprise aimed at strengthening the tech ecosystem by developing a more inclusive talent pipeline that reflects social mobility as a core value.

We have already secured over a quarter of a million in investment funding which has allowed us to create a plan to reach over 2000 young people across Cornwall & Devon from 2024-2026. This will be done through a partnership with various stakeholders in the South West (Cognition Learning, CYNAM, Tech Cornwall, EVO Academy, Tech South West, The Careers & Enterprise Company).

This work would not have been possible without the generous support of the following:
