Louise Rowley

Executive Principal, University Centre Somerset College Group

Louise Rowley has spent more than 30 years in further education, driven by a strong belief in the transformative power of education to change lives, raise aspirations and strengthen communities. As the first person in her family to attend university, she understands first-hand how access to education can unlock opportunity and create pathways that might otherwise seem out of reach.

Beginning her career as a teacher specialising in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Louise has progressed through curriculum management and senior leadership roles and is now Executive Principal of University Centre Somerset College Group. Throughout her career, she has remained passionate about ensuring that education is accessible, ambitious and inclusive, enabling every individual to achieve their potential regardless of their starting point or circumstances.

Louise believes that education is one of the most powerful tools for social mobility and community transformation. Her work has focused on developing ambitious curricula that respond to local, regional and national needs, creating opportunities for learners to gain the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world. She is particularly committed to ensuring that education and skills provision aligns with economic opportunities, helping individuals, businesses and communities to thrive.

A strong advocate of partnership working, Louise recognises that improving life chances requires collaboration across education, employers, public services and community organisations. She is passionate about bringing people together to understand the challenges facing communities and to develop collective solutions that remove barriers to participation, progression and success. She believes that identifying and addressing these barriers is fundamental to enabling individuals to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential.

Throughout her leadership career, Louise has championed inclusion, recognising that talent is distributed across society but opportunity is not always equally accessible. She is committed to ensuring that learners from all backgrounds are supported to succeed and that educational institutions play a leading role in promoting social mobility and economic prosperity.

Louise joined the South-West Social Mobility Commission because of her commitment to improving opportunities for people across the region. She believes that where an individual grows up should never determine what they can achieve and is passionate about working with partners to address inequality, strengthen communities and create pathways to success for future generations. For Louise, it remains a genuine privilege to work in education and to play a part in transforming lives through learning.
